Camp Life: A Long Tradition

Each summer has a unique personality at Glen Arden. This develops out of those activities and ceremonies through which we express ourselves. Our tradition begins with Opening Banquet when each camper is given her Clan Tie. Many of the campers wear ties their mothers and grandmothers wore.

As evening falls during the week milk and crackers are served followed by "Shiney Miney." This brings the entire camper body into a giant circle, arm over arm, singing "The Lord's Prayer" and "Now the Day is Over." So ends the Glen Arden day.

Friday nights we have banana splits followed by Council Fire during which every camper is recognized for her weekly achievements. Singing and stories about the heritage of our North Carolina mountains, nature's wonder's, and the rare sighting of the Tajar are all a part of Council Fire. Slide Supper is a happy late Saturday afternoon occasion where we slide on our own "in camp" sliding rock and eat "McArden Burgers" grilled on our enormous stone barbeque pit.

Sundays are a day apart. Catholic campers go to Mass in Hendersonville and return to join the rest of the camp in the dining hall for breakfast, complete with Krispy Kreme donuts. After cabin cleanup and linen exchange the entire camper body walks up to the Green Cathedral where Sunday School is led by counselors and staff. There are camp-wide activities on Sunday afternoons which include Counselor Hunt, Capture the Flag, or a Red/Blue soccer game. Campers plan and carry out Sunday evening Vespers. Each unit has one Sunday evening during their stay at camp to lead the whole camp community at the meaningful and thoughtful time.

Camp-wide celebrations include Christmas, Mardi Gras, Fourth of July (peanuts are dropped on the upper field from an airplane) and clan events.
