Before you apply for a position on the staff, Glen Arden deems it wise that you give serious thought to the encompassing and continuous responsibilities falling upon a counselor and cabin leader.  Do not get the mistaken idea that Glen Arden will provide for a counselor a home base for a carefree summer vacation with but a few hours of play with campers during the days and with nights free to leave camp in search of fun and pleasure.  A counselor experience can be most stimulating and self-satisfying, depending upon the counselor’s attitude and her realization, acceptance, and execution of the responsibilities involved.

The hours of active day are long but not arduous.  Time off each week is not only allowed but encouraged.  Except for time off, the counselor’s responsibility to the campers in general and the campers under her care in particular, begins when camp opens and ends only when camp closes.  Parents’ responsibility for their children is a ‘round the clock proposition.  When they send a girl to Glen Arden, that responsibility and all of its ramifications is transferred to us.  It is a tremendous matter—a sacred trust—this business of having the complete care of many mothers’ and fathers’ daughters in the summer.  The seriousness of this trust cannot be overemphasized.  The joys to be derived from having contributed in a large measure to the well being, happiness, and development of girls cannot be topped.

Think it over—and if you are still interested check yourself on the qualities and attitudes listed below that are requisites of those ladies selected by Glen Arden to share our responsibilities and accomplishments.

Clean habits, leadership, patience, adaptability, composure, initiative, sympathetic understanding, unselfishness, versatility, resourcefulness, a camping attitude, willingness to forego the use of alcohol and drugs not prescribed by a Physician for the entire period of employment, ability to instruct or assist in one or more camp activities, willingness to assist in any activity or any work in an emergency.

We are grateful for your interest in a position at Glen Arden and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

                                            Casey Thurman, Director
